What styles of engagement rings are there?
Trying to find the right style of ring for your partner can be hard (whether you do it alone or together). It’s important to do some research before you visit your local jeweller. There are several factors to think about: 1. Setting, 2. Style, 3. Metal, 4. Stone.
Setting refers to how the diamond (or any stone) is secured in the ring, examples include Claw, Bezel, Channel, Pavé, Bar, Cluster, Flush or Tension setting.
Style refers to the appearance of the ring, some examples include, Solitaire (single stone set in to your choice of metal and setting. Halo (centre stone with a circle of small stones all the way around it), twisted bands, band with shoulders, triple stone rings, cluster, two-toned and multiple stone shapes. Check out out Engagement ring Guide for further information.
Metal refers to which type of metal you choose for your ring. Some options include, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum. Check out our Guide to Gold for further information.
The typical engagement ring holds a white diamond, however, if you like colour then you can select and coloured stone instead. E.g. Coloured Diamonds, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, or Aquamarine. Different gemstones are said to have various meanings (link to graphic from shine on stones?). You can select the stone based on its symbolism e.g. Aquamarine promotes good health, happiness and hope. For a comprehensive overview read our Birthstone Guide.
How do I keep my diamond jewellery clean and looking brand new?
There are a few easy steps you can take to keep your jewellery looking brand new. Firstly always remove jewellery when swimming or showering, if your jewellery does get wet make sure you wipe it dry. When taking your jewellery off at night wipe it over to remove skin oils and makeup, and store your jewellery in separate compartments in your jewellery box to avoid scratching.
Even with doing the above steps you will need to clean your jewellery. The most effective way to clean your diamond jewellery at home is with warm water and a gentle detergent (never use harsh or abrasive cleaners, e.g. Toothpaste, or ammonia based products).
Ideally to ensure the best care of your precious diamonds take them to your local jeweller for a professional clean and inspection at least once a year.

How do I know what to look for when buying a diamond?
Without the knowledge it can be a daunting task to purchase such a precious item. You may have heard of the term 4 Cs because it is a common term used when discussing diamonds. Every diamonds value is determined by the 4 Cs which refer to the grading of a diamond. The 4 Cs relate to Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat weight. There is also one more important C we think you need to take into consideration and that is Confidence that you are shopping with a reputable jeweller. For an in-depth overview of the 4 Cs read our Diamond Buying Guide. (link to Diamond Buying Guide copy)
How do I care for my pearls?
Pearls are porous and must be kept separately from other jewellery wrapped in a soft cloth or pouch. They need moisture so don’t keep them in an airtight container.Avoid pearls coming into contact with beauty products such as lotions and perfume, as it may deteriorate the surface of the pearl.
To clean your pearls, gently wipe them with a warm damp cloth after each wear. You should wash your peals periodically with mild soap (NOT detergent) and a soft cloth. Then rinse them in clean water and wrap in a damp cotton towel to dry. If the pearls are especially dirty, wipe the pearl with acetone polish remover. Acetone will not hurt pearls. DO NOT use jewellery cleaners with ammonia or vinegar in them.
It is also recommended you have your pearls restrung every two years to ensure they are secure.
